Libya: 'Eight SAS Soldiers Freed By Rebels'

7:26am UK, Monday March 07, 2011

Mike Bradbury, Sky News Online
Eight SAS soldiers detained by Libyan rebels near Benghazi have left the country aboard HMS Cumberland, according to Sky News sources.

According to reports, the group had been taken to Benghazi after being apprehended near the port city.

A British diplomat who was with the unit was said to have been involved in negotiations for their release.

Foreign Secretary William Hague confirmed a British diplomatic team detained by Libyan rebels were freed and had left the country.

"The team went to Libya to initiate contacts with the opposition," said Mr Hague.

"They experienced difficulties which have now been satisfactorily resolved."

The Foreign Secretary said other diplomats would be sent to Libya to "strengthen dialogue" with rebel leaders.

Before the release, rebels had reportedly said the soldiers were being well treated and the issue would soon be resolved.

Conversation between ambassador and rebel leader

Defence Secretary Liam Fox earlier confirmed a "small diplomatic team" had been in Benghazi to talk to Libyan rebels.

Mr Fox declined to comment on reports the SAS unit guarding the team had been detained.

"We are in touch with them but it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on that," he told the Andrew Marr show.

According to the Sky sources the eight SAS members were among a group of around 22 soldiers and one diplomat believed to have been dropped by helicopter in an area south of the Benghazi.

Audio of a telephone conversation between the UK's ambassador to Libya, Richard Northern, and a senior rebel leader was later leaked.

In it, Mr Northern suggested the SAS team had been detained due to a "misunderstanding".

The rebel leader responded: "They made a big mistake, coming with a helicopter in an open area."

Mr Northern said: "I didn't know how they were coming."

The SAS's intervention allegedly angered Libyan opposition figures who ordered the armed and plain-clothes soldiers to be locked up on a military base.

Opponents of Col Gaddafi's feared he could use any evidence of Western military interference to rally patriotic support for his regime.

The Geneva-based Human Rights Solidarity group said the soldiers were caught when they were at a location six miles (10km) from Benghazi's airport at Benina.

British Special Service force capturedby rebels

James Kirkup, Nick Meo and Caroline Gammell, The Daily Telegraph · Monday, Mar. 7, 2011

A U.K. Special Air Service forces mission to Libya has resulted in humiliation after the troops were captured by rebels and a diplomat's plea for their release was broadcast on state television.

The mission was errorstrewn from the beginning, when a helicopter carrying the team of seven SAS soldiers and an MI6 officer landed near Benghazi without notifying the rebel commanders -causing the insurgents to think that they were under attack.

The team aggravated the situation by claiming to be unarmed -which only made their predicament worse when their weapons were discovered. Members of the group were handcuffed and taken to a military base as British officials frantically tried to secure their release.

A senior British diplomat was then unwittingly broadcast on state television pleading for them to be set free.

The conversation, purport-edly between Richard Northern, the British ambassador to Libya, and a rebel official, was intercepted on Sunday.

In it, Mr. Northern said there had been a "misunderstanding" as the British contingent was only trying to contact rebel forces and assess the humanitarian situation.

MPs said the intercepted calls could boost Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's position by allowing him to suggest that the opposition groups are in league with Western governments. William Hague, Britain's Foreign Secretary, is expected to make an urgent statement to the House of Commons on Monday.

Hafiz Ghoga, a spokesman for the rebels' National Council, said: "The reason they were arrested was that they came into the country unofficially and without any arrangement with the Libyan authorities. Libya is an independent nation, we have our borders [and] we should expect them to be respected by everybody."

The intelligence officer and escort left Libya on Sunday aboard HMS Cumberland.

The failed mission and subsequent negotiations have led to a disastrous start for any cooperation between Britain and the rebel troops.

Mr. Hague confirmed in a statement that a "small diplomatic team" had been in Benghazi and "experienced difficulties." Britain would send more such teams in future, he said.

Sir Menzies Campbell, the former Liberal Democrat leader, said the fate of the mission would "cause disappointment and embarrassment in Whitehall."

David Cameron under fire over bungled SAS mission in Libya

by Steve White, Daily Mirror 7/03/2011

DAVID Cameron was last night accused of bungling an SAS mission in Libya which led to the crack team being seized by rebels.

Military sources said the eight-man squad, including one member of MI6, was rushed into the risky operation with no proper planning or back-up.

The men, later released unharmed, were captured by farmhands soon after arriving to help oust Gaddafi. One ex-SAS soldier said: “It was badly planned and under-resourced.”

THEY are the cream of the military crop, forever poised to swoop into the most dangerous hotspots around the world.

But brave SAS troops – plus an agent from MI6 – were put at unnecessary risk by bungling ConDem politicians who rushed them into an operation without proper back-up.

Last night David Cameron came under fire over the fiasco that led to the capture of a Special Forces team in Libya who were guarding British officials hoping to meet with commanders in rebel-held Benghazi.

Phone calls from London begging for the team’s release were also intercepted by Colonel Gaddafi’s forces, then broadcast on Libyan state TV.

In one call, former Libyan justice minister Mostafa Abdel Jalil told British ambassador Richard Northern: “They made a big mistake coming with a helicopter in an open area.”

Mr Northern replied: “I didn’t know how they were coming.”

The released team of eight was last night being debriefed on board Malta-bound frigate HMS Cumberland.

One military source said the SAS/MI6 team were under-resourced, under pressure from the Government and given little time to plan the operation properly.

The source added: “Yet again, lions are led by donkeys. The outcome could have been catastrophic. It’s not the troops’ fault, it is our government’s cock-up. Either they knew about the mission beforehand and rubber-stamped it, or they didn’t and were ill-informed.

“This was a low-key mission and not an offensive but clearly there were huge risks. The SAS plan, plan and plan again. They work out what can go wrong and make sure if that happens they can do something about it. In this case they have been proved under-resourced, in that they appear not to have any back-up. The expression is ‘if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail’.”

Defence Secretary Liam Fox tried to distance himself from the bungled operation. But an ex-SAS soldier told how it exposed shocking gaps in the Tory-led Government’s commitment to our armed forces. The ex-fighter said: “These guys are the best and it appears that terrible gaps were left in the planning. It seems to have been a rush job, they were under pressure to get the job done. It couldn’t have been well-planned. Even though it was low-key, there was clearly no back-up. The blame lies with the Government.”

The eight-man SAS/MI6 team, a translator and a Foreign Office worker were seized by rebels as soon as they arrived in Benghazi on Friday. Fighters opposed to Gaddafi feared the group might be foreign mercenaries. The team were carrying light weapons and ammo to protect themselves. They were wearing civilian clothes but are understood to have had some kind of uniform and body armour underneath. As they were held, the men made no attempt to open fire, worried it would spark a gunfight.

The team had set off from Tripoli in two 4x4 civilian people carriers and drove to Benghazi, avoiding militia checkpoints and sporadic fighting along the way.

There were reports of a helicopter being used in the operation and men “dressed in black” but our source said this was “unlikely”. The insider added: “SAS men wear black for counter-terror missions. This is very unlikely to be used in this operation which was low key.”

It is understood the operation, planned in Libya, involved a team from the SAS’s Revolutionary Warfare Wing. The Mirror has been asked not to reveal some details of the debacle for security reasons.

Gaddafi's forces capture Dutch marines on rescue mission

Three Dutch marines are being held in Libya after they were captured by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi while trying to rescue Dutch workers.

The marines were surrounded by armed men and captured on Sunday after landing near Sirte in a Lynx helicopter that was on board a navy ship, HMS Tromp, which is anchored off the Libyan coast to help evacuations, Dutch defence ministry spokesman Otte Beeksma said.

Dutch officials were in "intensive negotiations" with the Libyan government to secure the marines' release, he said.

"We have also been in contact with the crewmen involved. They are doing well under the circumstances and we hope they will be released as quickly as possible."

Asked if the Dutch government considered the marines hostages, Beeksma said: "They are being held by Libyan authorities."

Two people the marines were trying to rescue were also captured but have been released and left the country. The identities of the marines were not released.

News of the marines' detention came a day after anti-government rebels fought off forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi in a fierce battle for Brega, a strategic oil facility east of Gaddafi's stronghold in Tripoli.

The prosecutor of the international criminal court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, is expected to announce on Thursday that he is opening an investigation into possible crimes against humanity committed in Libya.

Франция оказывается помогает оружием ливийским повстанцам. Ни фига себе!

France secretly armed Libya's rebels for push on Tripoli

By Catrina Stewart
Thursday, 30 June 2011

France has been covertly arming rebels in the mountains south of Tripoli eyeing a push on the Libyan capital to hasten the demise of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s 41-year regime.

The French military confirmed yesterday that France, a lead player in the Nato alliance tasked with enforcing a no-fly zone in Libya, had air-dropped light weapons and munitions to the rebels earlier this month.

It is the first time that a Nato country has supplied military aid to Libyan rebels directly, and it is likely to anger countries such as Russia and China, which have accused the military alliance of overstepping its original United Nations-backed mandate to protect civilians.

News of the airdrop first emerged yesterday in French newspaper Le Figaro, which, citing a secret intelligence memo and unnamed sources, said that France had delivered heavy arms to the rebels, including anti-tank missiles, equipment that could significantly alter the balance of power between rebels and regime forces fighting just south of the capital.

The newspaper, which said France made the decision without consulting its Nato partners, claimed that the weapons were intended to help rebels push through to the capital, Tripoli, and encourage a popular uprising in the city, which has seen only sporadic opposition to Col. Gaddafi. “If the rebels can get to the outskirts of Tripoli, the capital will take the chance to rise against Gaddafi,” said an official quoted in the report.

France was one of the chief backers of military intervention in Libya, and along with Britain, it has led the near daily airstrikes that began in March targeting Col Gaddafi’s military assets.

But despite Western assistance, the revolt against Col Gaddafi’s regime that started in February has only made faltering gains, with rebels hampered by a lack of training, equipment and funding. Nato allies had until now limited themselves to delivering money and advice to the rebels, mainly in the east of Libya where rebels have formed a transitional council in Benghazi. British Foreign Secretary yesterday confirmed that £100 million had been transferred to rebels in Benghazi amid earlier complaints that promises of money had not materialised.

A French military spokesman yesterday refuted Le Figaro’s claims that France had supplied heavy arms, saying that the rebels, Berbers in the western Nafusa mountains, had appeared vulnerable to attacks by loyalist forces, prompting the decision to drop assault rifles and ammunition for their own protection.

“We began by dropping humanitarian aid: food, water and medical supplies,” Col. Thierry Burkhard told Agence France-Presse. “During the operation, the situation for the civilians on the ground worsened. We dropped arms and means of self-defence, mainly ammunition.”

The Berber rebels in the Western mountains are much smaller in number than their counterparts in eastern Libya and Misrata, a city close to Tripoli that has seen fierce resistance, and so their gains against loyalist troops have been fewer. Nevertheless, the weapons drop appears to have bolstered their efforts, enabling them to push through to the town of Bir al-Ghanam in a surprise breakthrough at the weekend, bringing them roughly 50 miles south of Tripoli, the closest they have come yet to the capital.

For some in Nato, the gains are not happening fast enough, and France and Britain badly need to show progress in the assault on Col Gaddafi’s military resources if they are to deflect growing criticism of the mission. To some, the rebels in the west offer the best chance of that.

Both Russia and China have been highly critical of the military operation in the wake of civilian casualties, and the alliance itself has been fractured by internal divisions over mission creep. Dutch Defence Minister Hans Hillen yesterday described some of his Nato allies as “naïve” for thinking that a bombing campaign would convince Col. Gaddafi to step down or change course.

“Libya is too big and all the military goals too big,” he said. “The solution should be a political solution and the military only helps to achieve this and the question is: ‘how long will you push on the military side if the political one doesn't move?’”

Laughing
Хотя вывод, что он защищает интересы клиента - это в самом начале объявляется. Laughing
