YouTube clip shows IDF soldier belly-dancing beside bound Palestinian woman
A number of IDF soldiers have over the last year faced investigation and penalty for documenting themselves performing questionable acts in front of Palestinian prisoners or while on patrol.
By Haaretz Service

A new video uploaded to YouTube shows an Israel Defense Forces soldier wriggling in a belly dance beside a bound and handcuffed Palestinian woman, to the cheers of his comrades who were documenting the incident.

The IDF's internal investigation department ordered an immediate probe into the matter after the Ch. 10 television program Tzinor Laila caught wind of the clip on the internet. The full clip and the details behind the incident will be broadcast on the show just before midnight on Monday.

A number of IDF soldiers have over the last year faced investigation and penalty for documenting themselves performing questionable acts in front of Palestinian prisoners or while on patrol.

In August, former soldier Eden Abergil raised controversy by posting pictures of herself beside a bound and blindfolded Palestinian prisoner on her Facebook page.

Days later, three IDF soldiers were arrested taking photographs of themselves alongside cuffed and blindfolded Palestinian detainees using their cellphones.

Photographs uploaded by Abergil and labeled "IDF – the best time of my life," depicted her smiling next to Palestinian prisoners with their hands bound and their eyes covered.
A comment attached to one of the photos of the soldier smiling in front of two blindfold men and posted by one of Abergil's friends read "That looks really sexy for you," with Abergil's response reading: "I wonder if he is on Facebook too – I'll have to tag him in the photo."

A comment allegedly added by Abergil to her Facebook page later that wee said that she would "gladly kill Arabs – even slaughter them."

"In war there are no rules," Abergil allegedly wrote on the wall of her profile page.

Other soldiers faced disciplinary action over the last year for uploading video of themselves stopping a patrol in the West Bank to dance to American electro-pop singer Kesha's hit Tick Tock.

The video "Batallion 50 Rock the Hebron Casbah" shows six dancing Nahal Brigade soldiers, armed and wearing bulletproof vests, patrolling as a Muslim call to prayer is heard. Then the music changes and they break into a Macarena-like dance.

The video was uploaded over the weekend, and quickly spread across Facebook pages and blogs before it was removed by those who uploaded it.

Former Israeli soldiers break the silence on military violations

Testimonies posted on YouTube by campaign group describe routine harassment and humiliation of Palestinian civilians

Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza

Transgressions by the Israeli army in the occupied Palestinian territories will be disclosed by a group of former soldiers in an internet campaign aimed at raising public awareness of military violations.

Video testimonies by around two dozen ex-soldiers - some of whom are identifying themselves for the first time - will be posted on YouTube. The campaign by Breaking the Silence, an organisation of former soldiers committed to speaking out on military practices, launches with English subtitles on Monday.

Some of the former soldiers describe the "neighbour procedure", a term for the use of Palestinian civilians, often children, as human shields to protect soldiers from suspected booby traps or attacks by militants. The procedure was ruled illegal by Israel's high court in 2005.

Others speak of routine harassment of civilians at checkpoints, arbitrary intimidation and collective punishment.

Idan Barir, who served in the artillery corps, describes in his testimony how an officer forced Palestinian civilians to crawl in a "race" towards a checkpoint near Jenin in the West Bank during the 2000 olive harvest. Only the first three out of "teams" of eight were allowed to pass.

Another, Itamar Schwarz, says Palestinian homes were routinely ransacked in search operations. He describes the day of the World Cup final in 2002, when soldiers confined a Palestinian woman and child in the kitchen of their home for two hours while the unit watched the game in the middle of an operation.

Arnon Degani, who served in the Golani brigade, describes the distress of a young woman who tearfully pleaded to be allowed to pass through a Jenin checkpoint in order to sit an important exam. He gradually came to understand, he says, that the Israeli army's intention was "to enforce tyranny on people who you know are regular civilians" and to "make it clear who's in control here".

"Part of the silence of Israeli society is to believe these are isolated and exceptional incidents. But these are the most routine, day-to-day, banal stories," said Yehuda Shaul, of Breaking the Silence.

Identification of the ex-soldiers willing to speak out was important, he said, "so that Israelis understand that there are people behind these stories, that in a sense we're all involved".

The former soldiers were aware of the potential legal and social consequences of going public, Shaul added. "They understand that they risk being prosecuted for what they're saying. But they're doing it because it needs to be done."

Since Breaking the Silence was launched in 2004, it has met with a hostile response from Israel's political and military establishment, partly targeting the anonymity of some witnesses. There have been attempts to discredit supporters and block funding, and its leaders have been subject to interrogation. Censure increased after it published testimony by soldiers who took part in the war on Gaza in 2008-09.

Schwarz, 29, who served in the Nahal infantry brigade between 2000 and 2003, told the Guardian that he had gone public with his testimony "because to me it's important that Israeli society is exposed to the moral price and moral experience that an Israeli soldier goes through in armed service".

The events he describes are "things that are really little, but they tell you the big picture of the occupation".

He said his army experience was "like a scar, I carry it with me. We have to talk about it, to put it out to the world. Only then can a society deal with the moral price."

The Israeli Defence Forces said: "The allegations made by Breaking the Silence are unfamiliar to us. The organisation has been informed, on numerous occasions, of the option of filing specific complaints including personal testimonies and other evidence through the appropriate channels. This is to ensure that their allegations are subjected to a thorough and proper legal investigation. To date the organisation has refused to provide substantiated allegations, making it impossible to properly examine their claims."

Israel won't investigate IDF soldier photographed next to bound Palestinians
While the deputy state prosecutor says Eden Aberjil's actions do not justify criminal proceedings, he will launch criminal investigations into two other IDF soldiers over footage of controversial behavior.
By Tomer Zarchin Tags: Israel facebook IDF

Deputy State Prosecutor Shai Nitzan decided Thursday not to launch a criminal investigation against former Israel Defense Forces soldier Eden Aberjil, who in 2010 photographed herself standing next to tied up Palestinian detainees. Instead, he ordered an investigation against another two soldiers.

The first of the IDF soldiers to be investigated was pictured pointing a rifle at a bound and blindfolded detainee who stood beside him. The other soldier to be investigated filmed a video of himself dancing to music around a tied-up and blindfolded Palestinian woman. Both photographs and the video were posted on Facebook.

Nitzan said Aberjil's photographs, which stirred up a storm around the world, are shameful, yet they do not justify criminal proceedings, only disciplinary ones. "Since military law does not apply to Eden Aberjil, it is not possible to take disciplinary measures against her nor are criminal proceedings justified," said Nitzan. Aberjil was discharged from the IDF in 2009.

Nitzan called on the military authorities to strengthen military law enforcement by educational means and by introducing harsher penalties.

After Aberji's photographs were revealed, she said she "still doesn't understand what was wrong." The photographs were uploaded to Facebook with the title "The army: the best time of my life." "It was an innocent photograph," she said. "There was no statement in the picture."

Aberjil said the photographs were taken near Gaza, and that the detainees were Palestinians caught trying to cross the fence. She said the photographs "reflected an army experience" and were not intended to harm the detainees. She added that she didn't speak to them, and only brought them food and water.

UN: Israel used unnecessary force against protesters on Nakba Day
Israel furious over critical UN report that IDF used live fire against unarmed Lebanese protesters, cuts contact with Lebanon coordinator.
By Barak Ravid

A new report of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is highly critical of Israel for its handling of incidents on the border with Lebanon on May 15 - Nakba Day. It concludes that the Israeli soldiers used disproportionate force against Lebanese demonstrators, which resulted in seven deaths.

In Israel there is great anger at the UN special coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams, who authored the report, and the Foreign Affairs Ministry is cutting contact with him until further notice.

The secretary general's report, which deals with the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (ending the Second Lebanon War ), was disseminated several days ago to members of the Security Council, and Haaretz received a copy.

The report mainly deals with the Nakba Day incidents.

In its conclusions the secretary general expresses concern about Nakba Day and notes that IDF soldiers "used direct live fire against unarmed demonstrators" who tried to breach the border fence. He called on the Lebanese Army and the IDF to avoid such incidents from recurring.

"I call on the Israel Defense Forces to refrain from responding with live fire in such situations, except where clearly required in immediate self-defense. Notwithstanding every country's inherent right of self defense, there is a need for the Israel Defense Forces always to apply appropriate operational measures, including crowd control measures, which are commensurate to the imminent threat toward their troops and civilians," the report states.

The report notes that some 8,000-10,000 demonstrators participated in the Nakba Day demonstrations in Lebanon, most of them Palestinian refugees. "Organizers included Palestinian and Lebanese organizations, among them Hebollah," the report said.

About 1,000 protesters broke off from the main demonstration, which took place without disorder, and moved toward the border fence with Israel, throwing stones and firebombs, and removing 23 anti-tank mines, the report notes.

"Following a verbal warning and firing into the air, the Israel Defense Forces then directed live fire at the protesters at the fence," according to the report, "killing seven civilians and injuring 111."

The report is based on the investigation findings of UNIFIL, which note that it was the Palestinian demonstrators who initiated the trouble, were first to use violence, and violated UN Security Council Resolution 1701. However, the majority of the report's criticism is directed at the IDF.

"Other than firing initial warning shots, the Israel Defense Forces did not use conventional crowd control methods or any other method than lethal weapons against the demonstrators," the report states.

Moreover, the UN report notes that "the firing of live ammunition by the Israel Defense Forces across the Blue Line [the border fence] against the demonstrators, which resulted in the loss of civilian life and a significant number of casualties, constituted a violation of resolution 1701 (2006 ) and was not commensurate to the threat to Israeli soldiers."

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and at the IDF Planning Directorate which is responsible for dealing with Lebanon, they had expected a particularly critical report, especially because of the tension between Israel and the UN coordinator Michael Williams, who prepared the report on behalf of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Hours after the Nakba Day incidents, Williams assailed Israel and blamed it for the incidents, without condemning the attempt to breach the border fence from the Lebanese side. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was furious with the comments Williams made and instructed the Israeli delegation to the United Nations to contact the secretary general's office and complain about the coordinator for Lebanon. Similar demarches were made to the ambassadors of France, Italy and Spain at the UN, as they are the three countries contributing most of the troops to UNIFIL.

To send an even stronger message to Williams, the Foreign Ministry decided to cancel his periodic visit to Israel, which was due in a number of weeks. Williams asked to hear Israel's position on the events of Nakba Day, but he was told that there was no time to meet with him, and that Israel would relay its views directly to the secretary general's office.

Foreign Ministry sources said that it remains unclear whether Israel will resume contact with Williams.

Facebook

Fox News.

Naughty Israeli soldiers post more cheeky pics after being disciplined for online snaps

A group of frisky female Israeli soldiers published three more half-naked photos of themselves while on duty, almost immediately after they were punished for posting a similar photo last week on Facebook.

Israeli officials confirmed the soldiers had been disciplined for last week's cheeky snap. It is unclear if any new action has been taken against the sexy fighters.

The racy shots of the four unnamed servicewomen posing in underwear and a few items of combat gear is the latest social media scandal to hit the Israeli military.

Israeli news outlet Walla reported that the women were fresh recruits who were stationed on a base in the southern part of the country.

The first shot that got the group in trouble depicts the group posing in their underwear outside with their backsides positioned towards the camera. The shot is thought to have been inspired by a similar picture taken in January of 2012 where five women are seen wearing helmets and not much else.

Israeli military officials did not divulge the exact nature of the punishment they face but blasted their lack of professionalism. "The commanding officers disciplined the soldiers as they saw fitting," the army said in a statement.

In an effort to encourage female conscripts to stop stripping, the military instituted a series of lectures that stressed the importance of staying clothed while on duty.

Apparently the lectures had little effect on the women because the group published three more photos after they were disciplined. In the new pictures, the women are seen wearing very skimpy underwear while they cover their breasts with rifles.

In 2010, Israeli military brass instituted a social media ban after several pictures emerged of Israeli soldiers dancing suggestively around Palestinian prisoners, some of them blindfolded.

Earlier this year, another Israeli soldier was busted for posing naked with a gun and tweeting ant-Palestinian slogans.

The Israeli Army's social media chief was slammed as a racist last year after tweeting a picture of himself slathered in mud with a caption reading "Obama style."

Most Jewish Israeli men and women are required to serve in the military, starting at age 18.
